Circulators are a vital part of any hydronic system. They provide the pressure differential to make the hot (or chilled) water flow through all of the piping to all of the heat emitters in the heating system.
Up until a few years ago, all circulators in the US were single speed and were either on or off. This was fine until we found out about all of the circulator innovations from Europe. Because their electricity is so much more expensive, the European circulator manufacturers started to put variable speed motors in their circulators. The most common approach is the ECM motor – essentially a permanent magnet DC motor that will operate at any speed the built in controller requests.
This means that when the heating load varies (as it does in every home), the circulator can pump just the right amount of hot water through the heating system to the heat emitter (baseboard fin tube, radiators, radiant heat, fan coils, etc.).
To make this approach even more efficient, the controller senses the pressure requirements for the system and varies speed automatically. There are multiple circulator brands on the US market – the circulator shown here is the Bell Gossett EcoCirc Vario. We also install the Taco and Grundfos brand ECM circulators as well.
Our goal is to be Martha’s Vineyard’s premier plumbing and HVAC shop – we appreciate the opportunity to service and upgrade your hydronic circulation system.
